TALL hats and the British flag was flying at a Wigan church for a night of celebration,

Last Night of The Proms was held at Bethel Independent Methodist Church, in Hindley, where a masterpiece of music and song was bursting through the walls.

The orchestral evening included sounds from the organ, violins and the sailor’s hornpipe, playing classics including Dambusters, Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem.

There was also an Act of Remembrance for fallen soldiers.

Brian Mills, church member, said: “We had quite a good mixture and it was a roaring success – the church was absolutely full.

“We did a short remembrance service and some moving solos from Ron Machin and Maurice Monk.

“We had some amusing costumes and the hats just got bigger and bigger as the night went on.”

AN enthusiastic audience gave a final standing ovation at a Last Night of the Proms Concert at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil when the nationally acclaimed British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra provided a programme of music and fun.

The 32-piece orchestra, conducted by Fraser Goulding, delighted those present with a medley of music which, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, included, the RAF March Past, and both the Knightsbridge and the Dambusters Marches.

Popular classics, music from the ballet as well as well-known films were also featured along with light orchestral pieces and popular stage show numbers.

The concert culminated, of course, in Thomas Arne’s Rule Britannia, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 and Jerusalem.

Also appearing were internationally known soloists Jeni Bern and Andrew Forbes-Lane both of whom contributed to an evening of quality vocal music.

Lots of fun for an audience which ranged in ages from ten to 93 was created by an excellent compere, Mark Langley, who introduced each part of the programme with tremendous humour and who became instrumental in encouraging even the most reserved to partcipate in some highly-energetic flag-waiving and hand-clapping..

The concert was presented by the Rotary Club of Yeovil, supported by Old Mill, Accountants and Financial Advisers.

Proceeds from the event will benefit The Yeovil Young Achievers Trust – a registered charity which aims to support young people of Yeovil in furthering their studies and achieving higher standards, qualifications or a better standing in society.

BEAUTIFUL voices and sweet music will raise Selby Abbey roof when the district council chairman’s Proms concert is held later this month.

The climax of this year’s event on 12 September will be broadcast to screens in 15 countries, including Japan, Australia, Germany and South Africa.

Cyclists
There are bicycle racks near Door 1 and 11 of the Royal Albert Hall. (Neither the Hall nor the BBC can accept responsibility for items lost or stolen from these racks.) The Royal Albert Hall is unable to accept folding bicycles in the cloakrooms.

The Royal Albert Hall was constructed to accomplish the dream of Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s consort) of a ‘Central Hall’ that would be used to encourage sympathetic and admiration of the Arts and Sciences and would stand at the heart of the South Kensington estate, enclosed by museums and places of learning.

Located on the south side of Kensington Gardens in London and with a capacity of almost 6000, the world-famous Royal Albert Hall is where all the main orchestral Prom concerts take place

The Hall is a Grade I Listed building; and has been in nonstop use since it was opened in March 1871. It was always visualized as a multipurpose building to host not only concerts of music but exhibitions, public meetings, scientific conversations and award ceremonies. It is a registered charity held in trust for the nation but is financially self sufficient: it receives no funding from central or local government.
